Dirt Legal?

The FP post about the Mahindra Roxor reminded me that there is one for sale at a heavy equipment dealer near my house. In doing very little research to see if is anyway to get one road legal, I found !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!  Obviously I’d need things like mirrors and turn signals, but that’s nothing compared to dealing with the DMV getting something like this road legal, right?

Kinja'd!!!

I emailed them. They said they would get me a plate from South Dakota, registered to my home address in PA. Then I pay tax in SD and renew the tag each year. I asked about insurance and they said I should be able to insure it to my home address with an SD plate. Isn’t that dirt illegal? Even if the title in SD is legit, isn’t it illegal for me to be keeping it/driving it in PA?

What do you think?

The good news is, after the 2020 American elections, you should be able to vote from prison.

As far as I know these aren’t supposed to be registrable at all, even as SxS. That being said I saw one on the road with a plate the other day.

As someone who lives in PA and loves the idea of a street legal Roxor, I will be following this closely. There are like 7 of them at Blackmans Cycle Shop near me.

I don’t believe it’s legal, I believe PA only allows residents to drive an out of state vehicle for a fixed period of time before you’re expected to get a PA tag. A friend of mine out near Pittsburgh moved back up from Florida and kept FL tags on his truck, but he also maintained a valid FL drivers licensing using a relative’s address down there. He did get stopped by police a few times, since it’s a small town and they got used to seeing this out of state vehicle running around for 2 years, but he never got a ticket.

I think Florida plates are fairly common in PA because of all the people who flee south every winter to avoid the snow. I see more Florida plates in PA than I do for states in between PA and Florida.

A ticket I can deal with, I’m more concerned about what would happen if it was involved in an accident. Not that I’d be alive to worry about it driving that thing. Still, If someone get’s injured and the police take issue with how the vehicle is registered, could the insurance company say...Yeah we’re not paying anyone anything because of that...Seems super sketchy

We took the time to learn each state’s unique rules and regulations, so you don’t have to worry about navigating the bureaucratic red tape. so we can help you skirt your state’s rules  by exploiting loopholes in states that just don’t give a shit. We will get you a street legal* tag, title, and registration... * just not necessarily one for YOUR state.

Most states require you to register a vehicle locally after a set period of time, anyway.

And yeah. I’d imagine your insurance company would have something to say if you got in an accident. Namely, “you’re on your own.”

Yea skirting the in state registration is one thing, but rolling uninsured is something I wouldn’t risk. I’d have to get sign off from them which I doubt that I’d get.

You pay me some “rent” and you can use my address as a real South Dakota home address. Probably still illegal to drive in PA though being classified as a UTV and all. Then again it looks close enough to a Jeep that if you never get pulled over that you’ll probably be fine.

This is a super common workaround for getting off-road only dirtbikes plated as well.

Legally considered a SxS here in South Dakota and able to be plated as such. Fully road legal with the only rule being no interstates.

Yeah, it's "legal" in the same way people register supercars in like Kansas or something to avoid taxes. It's "legal" as in "not legal".

Just buy a lot in SD, now you live there too.

Welcome.  Tbh I’m a little sad because that little thing looks like a ton of fun and now I want one, but not having it road legal would be a no go for me.

What if I put some Jeep parts on it from a totaled jeep and then register it as a Jeep? or maybe something closer in size like Suzuki. Most people would have no idea, haha.

As long as you get a VIN from a Jeep I don’t see that ever being a problem.

Buy this and an old CJ that is trash,  put plates from CJ  on this change grill to look like CJ. Drive for years without a problem.(Don't actually do this)

Hah, that is a great idea. I honestly like that better than an out of state plate. You’d definitely get away with that unless you had an accident, or ran into an officer who really knows Jeeps.

If you happen to drive past the same local cop a few times they might hassle you. They’ll site the law where “when you have a vehicle in PA for more than 30 days it needs to be tagged in PA”. It could become a big hassle for you. I live right near the MD border, so I think I could get away with an out of state plate for quite a while.

I wonder if you could register it through Vermont using the mail in service that state offers.
